This picture to me, showed the reality of the Great Depression. This picture is of dying crops in a crop field. To me, the crops symbolize the nations slowly dying economy as it withers away. This picture is of an outdoor crop field. The lighting is great as you can clearly see everything in the picture. Its a rural setting. It seems as it's in a distant farm on the outskirts of a urban town. It looks dismal, and gloomy. The picture was obviously taken during the day because the sun is seen in the distant background. There is no body in this picture but in the background shows a beat-up farm. The farm is somewhere where a farmer would do his work. I think the overall tone of this picture is dark and negative because the crops symbolize the dying economy of America during The Great Depression.
This picture is of a black man standing in front of a grocery store. He is outside and he looks to be in his mid 60s. He is dressed sharp, and seems to be a man of integrity. The picture is taken outside and it seems to be either early in the mourning or in the early afternoon. The lighting is superb because its sunny and you can see everything clearly in this photograph. The name of the grocery store appears to read "Mccollum Grocery Company. Outside of the store seems to be an assortment of melons and a variation of small bags probably containing dry goods such as flour, or rice. To me, the tone doesn't not seem to appear that dismal. Theirs no indications of racism or hatred. Although, someone may argue that this photograph symbolizes how the blacks were "singled out" during that time.
In this photograph, there is a large sign that indicates where colored people could wait. There is no one in the picture. It appears that the photograph was taken on a cloudy day outside or near a bus stop. Now i say bus stop because early in a picture that i looked at there showed a similar over head many blacks boarding a bus. The lighting is fine, although it is cloudy. The sign seems to be covered by a shadow. I think the photographer took this photo at this very time because he wanted to show that blacks in this era were "out-cast." Like people who were shun from society and that were kept in the "dark."
Part 2
This photo shows "Rex Theatre For Colored People." Its a Movie theatre for blacks. The time of day seems to be mid-day and sunny. Its looks to be in an urban environment because of the paved streets and the brick housings. There are no people in this picture but what caught my eyes first were the various ads on the walls of the theatre. To me those ads are movie posters. The theatre seems to be in good condition. but the color of the bricks are fading. The tone is mellow, because theres nothing really going on but the tone seems to be a little on the darker side because of "For Colored People."
This is a picture of a black kid drinking out of a "colored" water fountain. The was alloted to negroes because at that time whites did not want to be associted with blacks let alone drink out of the same water fountain. This photo was taken outside and it seems to be a gloomy day. There are trees in the background and it looks like the water fountain is located next to a mansion or maybe a large building where people work. The little kid looks sad and tired. Maybe he was working and decided to stop for some water. The tone is upsetting because here is another example of how ignornat we were as a society to allow such bigotry and degrading acts of racism.
This picture shows a black women hoeing some sort of plant. The time of day seems to be somewhere near the end of the day. It looks like its getting dark. Maybe around six or seven depending on the daylight savings time. In the background there is a large strech of field and the vegetation that surrounds it. This lady looks to be poor because she has no shoes. This is shows how little blacks had during the great depression. The tone appears to be dank. Because it seems like this women will be there forever. The ever lasting stretch of land seems to be a symbol of the never ending struggle blacks will have.
